Pavers are individual units set on a compacted base, which lets them flex through freeze-thaw cycles and makes repairs simple. Patios, walkways, driveways, steps and walls can all be built in pavers, and borders in Belgian block or cobblestone add a finished edge.
Paver patios
A paver patio gives you outdoor living space with lots of color and pattern choices. Nicolock and Cambridge both offer paver lines that suit Long Island homes. If you are still deciding on material, read our paver patio vs. concrete patio comparison.
Walkways and sidewalks
A paver walkway leads people to the front door and can follow curves that are harder to pour in concrete. A contrasting border or soldier course keeps the edge clean. Walkways and sidewalks need a firm base so they do not settle into tripping hazards.
Paver driveways
Driveway pavers are thicker and set on a deeper base to carry vehicles. Because each unit is separate, a settled or stained area can be lifted and reset rather than replacing a whole slab. Belgian block aprons and borders pair well with paver and concrete driveways.
Cobblestone and Belgian block
Belgian block is squared granite, often used for aprons, curbs and edging. Cobblestone gives an older, more rustic look. Both are very durable. Our brick, block and stone masonry guide covers them in more detail.
Paver steps and walls
Paver steps connect patio levels and entries with a look that matches the patio. Segmental paver walls create seat walls and raised beds. See our steps and stoops service and our guide to steps and stoop materials.
Paver repair and replacement
Sunken areas, heaved pavers, weeds in joints and loose edges are common after a few Long Island winters. Most can be fixed by lifting the pavers, correcting the base and resetting them with fresh joint sand. When the base has failed across a large area, replacement is often the better choice. Our pavers and hardscapes service covers both new work and repairs.
