Removal is the first step of most replacement projects. Old concrete, brick, walls, patios and pavers are broken out, the debris hauled away and the base checked, so the new work starts on solid ground instead of on top of the problem that caused the old work to fail.
Concrete demolition and removal
Cracked driveways, sunken walkways, heaved patios and old slabs are broken up and removed before new concrete goes in. This is also the moment to fix the base and drainage. Our concrete driveways, patios and slabs service covers the new pour, and our concrete slabs and foundations guide explains the prep.
Masonry demolition and brick removal
Failing brick walls, deteriorated steps and damaged masonry features are taken down carefully, especially where they meet the house. Sometimes sound brick can be salvaged. New masonry is covered on our brick and block masonry service page.
Wall demolition
Leaning retaining walls and cracked garden walls are removed and rebuilt with proper drainage and a solid base. See our retaining and garden walls guide.
Paver, patio and walkway removal
Old patios and walkways, whether concrete, pavers or brick, are torn out so a new surface can go in on a properly compacted base. Replacement paver work is covered on our pavers and hardscapes service page, and steps on the steps and stoops service page.
Debris removal
Concrete and masonry debris is heavy. Hauling it away and leaving the site clean is part of a start-to-finish job, so you are not left with a pile in the driveway.
Preparing for the new work
Once removal is done, the area is excavated to the right depth, the soil checked, and the base and drainage built for whatever goes in next. Taking time here is what lets the replacement last through Long Island winters.

Frequently asked questions
Is removal included with replacement work?
On replacement projects, removing the old material and preparing the area is part of the job. Confirm the scope in your written estimate.
Can old concrete be poured over?
Sometimes, but if the old slab is failing because of its base, pouring over it carries the problem forward. Removal is often the better choice.
Can old brick be reused?
Sound brick can sometimes be salvaged, depending on its condition and how it was laid.
Do you haul away debris?
Debris removal is part of start-to-finish demolition and replacement work.
