Natural stone is solid quarried rock; cultured stone is a lighter manufactured veneer that looks like stone. Both can dress up walls, steps, columns and fireplaces. The choice comes down to the surface, the look you want and the budget.
Natural stone
Natural stone is cut from quarried rock, so no two pieces match. It is very durable and works for walls, steps, caps, treads and columns. Full stone is heavy, so it needs a solid footing or a structure built to carry it.
Cultured stone and stone veneer
Cultured stone is a manufactured product cast to look like natural stone. Stone veneer, natural or cultured, is a thinner layer applied over block, concrete or a prepared wall. Veneer lets you add a stone look to a foundation, chimney, wall or fireplace without building in full stone.
Stone walls, steps and stoops
Stone walls add texture to a yard. Stone treads and stone-faced risers give steps a substantial look and good traction. A stone stoop can transform an entry. See our steps and stoops service and our guide to brick, stone and concrete steps.
Stone columns and entryways
Stone columns at a driveway, gate or porch frame the approach to a home. Stone mailbox and package pillars are a popular way to add curb appeal. Entry walls and planters in stone tie the front of the house together.
Fireplace surrounds
Stone is a natural fit around indoor and outdoor fireplaces. Cultured stone veneer is often used indoors because of its lighter weight. Outdoor fireplaces are covered in our outdoor fireplaces and kitchens guide.
Stone repair and replacement
On Long Island, water and freeze-thaw cycles loosen stones, crack mortar joints and pop off caps. Individual stones can often be reset or replaced and joints repointed. When veneer has pulled away from its backing over a large area, it is usually removed and reinstalled. Our masonry repairs service covers stone repair, and brick and block masonry covers new work.

Frequently asked questions
Is cultured stone durable outdoors?
Yes, when installed correctly over a proper backing with attention to water management. Poor installation, not the product, is the usual cause of failure.
Can loose stones be reset?
Usually. Loose stones and caps can be reset with fresh mortar, and damaged ones replaced.
Can stone veneer go over an existing wall?
Often, over block or concrete that is sound and prepared properly.
Do you build stone mailbox pillars?
Yes. Stone and brick mailbox and package pillars are part of the masonry work Forte does.
