Pool areas see standing water, pool chemicals, hot sun and hard freezes in the same year. Durable materials, a well-compacted base and slope away from the pool are what keep a pool deck safe and good-looking on Long Island.
Pool decks and surrounds
The pool deck is the surface around the pool where people walk, sit and lounge. It needs a slip-resistant finish, slope that sends water away from the pool and toward drainage, and a surface that stays comfortable underfoot.
Pavers and concrete are the two most common choices. Our pavers and hardscapes service and concrete patios and slabs service cover both.
Pool pavers
Pavers are popular around pools because individual units can be lifted and reset if an area settles, and they come in many textures and colors. Nicolock and Cambridge both make paver lines suited to pool surrounds. Compare options in our paver patio vs. concrete patio guide.
Pool coping
Coping is the cap along the edge of the pool. It finishes the edge, directs splash water away from the pool wall and gives swimmers a secure grip. Coping can be stone, brick, paver bullnose or concrete.
Concrete around pools
Poured concrete gives a continuous surface with a broom or textured finish for traction. Control joints and proper slope matter even more around a pool, where water is constant.
Pool-wall masonry and stone features
Raised pool walls, seat walls, planters and stone or brick features can turn a plain pool into a finished backyard. Pool-area masonry often connects to outdoor kitchens and fireplaces; see our outdoor kitchens and custom masonry guide.
Repairs around pools
Settled pavers, loose coping, cracked concrete and failing mortar joints are common after a few Long Island winters. Pavers can usually be lifted and reset, and coping can be reset or replaced. Cracked or deteriorated masonry is covered by our masonry repairs service.

Frequently asked questions
Are pavers or concrete better around a pool?
Both work. Pavers are easier to repair in sections and offer more styles; concrete gives a continuous surface. Base and drainage matter more than the material.
Why is my pool coping loose?
Water, freeze-thaw cycles and movement between the deck and pool wall loosen coping over time. It can usually be reset.
Can settled pool pavers be fixed?
Yes. Settled pavers can be lifted, the base corrected and the pavers reset.
When is the best time to plan pool masonry?
Planning ahead of the swimming season gives time for scheduling and for the work to be completed before you want to use the pool.
